Compostable coffee bags wholesale: the honest landed-cost guideUnit price is not what you pay. Here is the real ladder — 100 pieces to 20,000 — and the three numbers nobody quotes you.

Same pouch, same size, same fittings. The only thing that changed is how many you buy and how the artwork is printed. That is a 17× spread on the unit price — and it is why every “wholesale price” you read online is meaningless without the quantity attached.

01Why almost every wholesale price you have been quoted is not comparable

Search “compostable coffee bags wholesale price” and you will find suppliers quoting $0.30, $0.45, $0.90 per bag. All of them are technically telling the truth, and none of them are comparable, because four variables move the number far more than the supplier does:

  • Quantity — the single biggest lever (see the 17× spread above).
  • Print method — digital has no plate cost and no minimum; rotogravure has a cylinder cost and a 10,000-piece floor, but a lower unit price above it.
  • Structure — kraft + PLA film, kraft + metallised cellulose, and PBAT/PLA multilayer are three different prices for three different barrier performances. “Compostable” alone tells you nothing.
  • Fittings — a certified compostable valve and a certified compostable zipper are extra parts with their own cost and their own certification.
Our stance
If a supplier gives you a per-unit price without stating quantity, print method and structure, treat it as a marketing number, not a price. Ask for the same pouch quoted at 100, 1,000 and 10,000 pieces — if they cannot produce that in writing, they do not control their own costing.

02The five line items between FOB and your warehouse

The quoted unit price × quantity is line one of five. The other four are where budgets actually break:

  1. Goods value — unit price × quantity.
  2. Freight — air freight is priced per kilo and moves in days; sea LCL is priced per cubic metre and moves in weeks. A 100 g pouch ships mostly as air; the same pouch in a carton ships as volume. This is why small orders often cost more to move than to make.
  3. Import duty — flexible plastic sacks and bags classify under HS 3923.21.00 (of polymers of ethylene) or 3923.29 (of other plastics). The US Column 1 general rate is 3%, but that is the starting point, not the answer.
  4. Trade measures — for Chinese-origin goods, Chapter 99 measures apply on top of the base rate. Section 301 provisions linked to 3923.21.00 add +25% or +7.5% depending on the entry date and product scope, and a reciprocal surcharge has been moving in and out through 2026.
  5. Clearance and inland delivery — broker fees, entry fees, and the truck that finally reaches your door.
The gap in every guide we read
Every top-ranking page lists “duty and shipping” as a cost. None of them tell you the classification, the stacked Chapter 99 measures, or which of the four variables changes your headline rate. That is the difference between a $0.41 bag and a $0.61 bag at your door.
Verify this for your own entry — do not copy our example
Duty is origin-, date- and scope-specific, and the Chapter 99 measures linked to HS 3923.21.00 changed during 2026. We deliberately do not print a single “current total duty rate” here, because any number we print would be wrong for someone. Ask your customs broker for the rate that applies to your origin, your product scope and your entry date — and if your supplier claims duty is “included”, ask which HS code they filed under.
Our stance
Comparing an FOB quote against a delivered quote is not a comparison. Ask every supplier for one number: landed cost per bag, delivered to this address, duty paid. If they will not put it in writing, you are the one carrying the currency, freight and duty risk — and you will find out at the port.

03The MOQ break-even nobody runs for you

Here is the arithmetic on the same 100 g pouch, using real quoted numbers:

Rotogravure at 10,000 pieces saves $1,528.50 against digital at the same quantity — $0.15 a bag. That looks like free money. It is not, because of three things:

  • You must commit 10,000 units up front. The same $4,128 buys only 2,789 pieces at the 1,000-piece digital price.
  • Your artwork locks. Cylinders are engraved for that design. Change the label next quarter and you have paid for tooling twice.
  • Material has a shelf life. If those 10,000 bags sit in your warehouse for two years, the barrier film ages and the certification story gets harder to defend. Cheap bags you cannot use in time are the most expensive bags you will ever buy.
Our stance
Do not go rotogravure on your first order. Start digital, prove the design and the fill weight on real stock, then move to cylinders once you are consistently moving 2,000+ bags a month. We have watched a first-time roaster commit to 10,000 units to save three cents a bag, then store 9,000 of them in a spare room.

04Industrial-only or home compostable? The question that voids your claim

“Compostable” splits into two very different products, and the gap decides whether your customer can actually compost the bag:

  • Industrial / commercially compostable — breaks down in a managed facility (typically 90 days). In North America look for BPI (verifying ASTM D6400); in Europe, TÜV OK Compost INDUSTRIAL or EN 13432. Most coffee bags are in this category, and most households cannot access the facility.
  • Home compostable — breaks down at backyard temperatures (typically ~180 days). Look for TÜV OK Compost HOME or AS 5810. This is a much smaller category and, as a rule, the harder barrier.

Two details decide whether the claim on your bag survives contact with a customer:

  • Certificate scope. A certificate for the film is not a certificate for the finished pouch. Valve, zipper, adhesive, ink and the laminated structure all have to be covered.
  • Certificate currency. Certificates expire. Ask for the licence number and the expiry date, and check them in the issuing body’s public register.
Our stance
If a supplier cannot show you all three — licence number, expiry date, and scope covering the finished pouch — treat the product as uncertified and do not print a compostability logo on it. That is the same test we apply when we buy.

05Barrier and shelf life: what compostable really costs you in freshness

This is the trade nobody puts on a product page. Coffee has three enemies — oxygen, moisture and light — and a conventional foil laminate beats every compostable structure on all three:

Across compostable structures the oxygen transmission rate runs 1–15 cc/m²/day, and where you land in that range depends on the build: add a high-barrier coating, a metallised layer, or both, and you sit at the low end with a 12+ month shelf life. Take those out to hit a price point and you are at the top of the range with months, not a year. Nitrogen flushing, a working one-way valve and climate-controlled storage recover a lot of the gap; storage in heat or humidity takes months back off. Two structural notes worth knowing:

  • Sealing temperature drops. Plant-based films seal around 110–150 °C rather than 140–180 °C for polyolefins. If your filler runs hot bars, the film shrinks before it bonds.
  • Shelf life is not degradation. The material does not compost on your shelf — it needs sustained heat plus microbial activity. But the barrier does age, and light and heat accelerate it.
Our stance
Compostable is the wrong choice if any of these is true: you need 18+ months of shelf life, your distribution sits in uncontrolled heat and humidity, or you roast very light and your bags off-gas hard. Choose a recyclable mono-material pouch instead and be honest about it. A failed product in a compostable bag helps nobody.

06What actually goes wrong on a first order

Anonymised, from our own inbox — three patterns we see repeatedly, and what each one teaches:

The size that drifted

A chocolate maker ordered 80 × 100 mm pouches. The product came out larger and domed than the sample, and the pouches would not close. In the same conversation they had been told by “a packaging expert” that compostable film degrades quickly and would not protect the product. Both concerns are real; both were avoidable — a filled sample in the actual product shape would have caught the size, and a barrier data sheet would have settled the second.

The fitting nobody mentioned

A juice-bar owner bought a sachet machine, then discovered the roll film needed an optical eye-mark, a 76 mm core and a 250 mm outer diameter — none of it standard, none of it mentioned at the point of sale. The film did not run. The lesson is not about compostability: it is that film specifications are a conversation, not a product listing.

The bag that was two things at once

After a sample run, a haircare team could not tell which pouches in the box were recyclable and which were biodegradable — and thought the break-away band on the cap needed a special tool. When two materials sit in one shipment without clear labelling, your customer cannot dispose of either one correctly.

Our stance
Never approve a production run from a photo. Fill a sample with your own product, in its real shape and weight, and try to close it, seal it and store it for a week. Every failure above would have been caught by that one step — and it costs a fraction of a wrong run.

07Before you pay: the nine-point checklist

  1. Same pouch quoted at 100 / 1,000 / 10,000 pieces, in writing.
  2. Print method named — digital, or rotogravure with cylinder cost shown separately.
  3. Full structure stated: outer substrate, barrier layer, sealant layer, thickness.
  4. OTR and MVTR figures from the supplier’s technical data sheet, not a marketing page.
  5. Certification: issuing body, licence number, expiry date, and scope covering the finished pouch.
  6. Industrial or home compostable — stated explicitly, with the standard named (ASTM D6400 / EN 13432 / AS 5810).
  7. Valve and zipper: are they certified to the same standard as the bag?
  8. Landed cost per bag, duty paid, to your address — with the HS code they will file under.
  9. A filled sample in your own product, before the run is released.
