Hong Kong is an unusually awkward market for compostable packaging. It is a dense retail city with almost no industrial composting infrastructure, which means a compostable pack sold locally often has nowhere to go at end of life. Most of what is sold here is therefore either exported to markets that do have the infrastructure, or chosen for a different reason entirely. This page sets out what is actually available locally, in what quantity, and what the end of life reality is.

What the certifications actually cover
Home compostable film carries TUV OK Compost HOME and AS 5810, tested to break down in a domestic compost bin within 180 days. That is a genuine claim and it is the one that matters if your customers have a garden or a balcony composter.
Industrial compostable film carries EN 13432, ASTM D6400 and the Seed logo under AS 4736. Those standards describe breakdown in a commercial facility at sustained thermophilic temperatures. Hong Kong does not have a municipal collection route for this, so an industrial compostable pack sold in Hong Kong will most likely end up in landfill. It is still the correct material for export to the EU, Australia or the US west coast, where collection exists.
Both certificates cover the film construction. They do not automatically cover the printing ink, the adhesive or the finished filled pack, and they do not cover the pouch once it has food residue in it.
The Hong Kong specific limitation nobody mentions
Compostability is a disposal claim, not a materials claim. In a city where the commercial and domestic waste streams both go to landfill, a compostable pouch in the general waste bin behaves like any other waste. Buying compostable packaging in Hong Kong is therefore usually a decision about the market you sell into, not about local disposal.
If your customers are in Hong Kong and you want a defensible environmental claim, recyclable mono-PE is often the stronger choice, because the plastic recycling stream does exist locally even if its coverage is patchy. Compostable makes more sense when the pack is shipped to a market with collection infrastructure, or when the customer has their own compost.
This is why both options exist in the same catalogue rather than one being presented as the default.
What to check before you commit to a supplier here
- ✓Ask for the certificate number, not just the logo. TUV and the Australasian Bioplastics Association both issue registry numbers that can be checked with the certifier.
- ✓Ask which specific film construction is certified. A supplier who certifies one film and ships another is the most common failure in this category.
- ✓Ask what the minimum is for blank versus printed. A single headline "low MOQ" figure usually refers to blank stock only.
- ✓Ask who pays duty. A Hong Kong quote that is not DDP to your destination can land 10 to 20 percent higher than the number you approved.
- ✓Ask for a physical sample and seal it yourself. Seal behaviour and film stiffness are the two things that decide whether a pack runs on your line, and neither is visible in a PDF.
Frequently asked
Do you have a warehouse in Hong Kong?+
Yes. The office and warehouse are at No.41 1/F Wo Liu Hang Tsuen, Fotan, Hong Kong. Manufacturing is in China. Blank stock dispatches in 48 hours.
Can I buy compostable bags in Hong Kong in quantities under 500?+
Blank stock, yes, from 100 pieces at $0.056 to $0.352 per piece depending on size. Custom printed pouches start at 500 pieces.
Will Hong Kong recycle or compost a compostable pouch?+
No. Hong Kong has no municipal collection route for compostable packaging and the general waste stream goes to landfill. The compostable claim is only realised in a home composter, or in a market that collects commercial compostables.
Is recyclable mono-PE a better choice for Hong Kong customers?+
Often, yes. The local plastic recycling stream exists, even if coverage is uneven, so a mono-PE pouch has a realistic end of life where a compostable one usually does not. It depends on what your customers can actually access.
Are the certifications verifiable?+
Yes. Seed logo (industrial) and AS 5810 (home) registry numbers are available on request and can be checked with the issuing body.
